Starved Rock Buffet Letterbox
I & M Canal Series
LaSalle County, nearest town: Utica, Illinois
Clues:
Starved Rock gets its name from a tribal battle in the 1760s. A band
of Illiniwek Indians took refuge on the top of this rocky battlement,
but the Ottawa and Potawatomi surrounded and besieged them, so the
Iliniwek starved to death on top of the rock.
To commemorate this terrible battle, a sumptuous buffet is held every
Sunday in the grand Starved Rock Lodge atop the cliff nearby. You may
be wise to make reservations before your visit to be assured of a
table, especially on holiday weekends.
After gorging yourself on a dozen plates of waffles, potatoes, fried
chicken, fruit and omelets you are now ready to find the letterbox.
Waddle out to a nearby bridge over a red-furred gulch.
